A 55-year-old Bayham man has been charged with criminal negligence in the fire pit incident earlier this month that claimed the life of a one-year-old girl.
On July 12, Jake and Tina Hiebert, along with three of their children, a seven-year-old girl, a four-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl were rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries when a jerry can filled with diesel exploded during a bonfire at a Vienna Line residence.
Johan Hiebert has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and four counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
He will appear in St. Thomas court September 7.
The incident remains under investigation by the Elgin OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP’s Criminal Investigation Branch and in conjunction with Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario, Ontario Forensic Pathology Services and Office of the Fire Marshal.
