Rehabilitated and looking better than its age. At a short ribbon-cutting ceremony this afternoon in Port Stanley, Central Elgin Mayor Sally Martyn welcomed the King George VI lift bridge back into service after a 19-month rehabilitation.
Elgin County Warden Tom Marks reminded the large gathering the bridge has stood watch over residents and visitors alike for over 80 years.
The bridge first opened to the public on May 15, 1939 and was named in honour of King George VI who was visiting Canada at the time.
Martyn says the bridge has been part of many memories since its opening.
Marks added, it will now be able to continue to operate as a moveable bridge extending its lifecycle another 25 years, “bridging the gap between our past and our future.”
A short video celebrating the bridge’s long and interesting history has been produced and is available online at https://youtu.be/BrUo7Wogb3k
