A major rehabilitation and expansion of the Community Centre in Straffordville was announced this morning (Friday). The federal and provincial government are investing over $1.4 million toward the $2 million project. The Municipality of Bayham is contributing $535,000.
The goal is to created an all-season, accessible community hub offering enhanced recreational options. The work will include the addition of a commercial kitchen, more change rooms, an accessible walking trail, repairs to a pavilion and sports field building.
Bayham Mayor Ed Ketchabaw noted when finished the expanded community centre will “enhance recreational opportunities for all our residents across Bayham.”
Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek added, “The new hub will be a place where happy memories are made for generations to come.”
Back in 2015, the municipality temporarily closed the community centre and planned to put it on the selling block. A petition was circulated by The Concerned Residents of Bayham Committee urging Bayham council to preserve the centre as a public facility.
