A blaze that broke out around 5:06 p.m. at Walker Dairy Farm in Malahide Wednesday afternoon has sadly claimed the lives of approximately 100 cattle.
Based on a report from the Elgin County OPP, they joined fire crews from Malahide, Aylmer and Bayham on scene of the fully involved blaze that occurred in the bulk milk storage barn, milking parlour, and farm office.
No farm personnel were in the structure at the time, however approximately 70 cattle were trapped in the milking parlour, with approximately 300 that had escaped to an outside pen.
A local veterinarian attended the scene to treat and put down cattle as necessary with approximately 100 cows lost as a result of the fire.
The fire is believed to have started in the bulk milk storage barn but a cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is still under investigation.
Fire crews say damage and losses are estimated at 5 million dollars.
