Today 94.1 myFM and Fanshawe College St. Thomas Elgin Regional Campus are shining a light on some of the amazing teachers we have in our community with our Excellent Educators Day.
As a relative newcomer to teaching full-time, Kylie Garrison has advanced from initially filling in as a supply teacher, which she began in 2015. In her second year of full-time instruction, she is at Mitchell Hepburn Public School teaching students in Grade 7. She enjoys having the ability to bring her personal interests, like coaching various sports and an appreciation of the arts, to share with her students.
She says the feeling at the start of a new academic year is like being introduced into a new family, a group of students she will share a variety of experiences with over the course of 10 months.
Garrison admits teaching online during the pandemic has presented challenges, but has also offered opportunities, including increasing the technological knowledge of her students and herself.
For a young person considering a career as an educator, Garrison stresses take time to speak with as many teachers as possible. They will be your best resource.
Garrison says she really enjoyed school as a youngster, in particular interacting with her teachers, and seeing them take on extracurricular activities inspired her to bring her unique talents to the classroom to benefit her young students.
