Today 94.1 myFM and Fanshawe College St. Thomas Elgin Regional Campus are shining a light on some of the amazing teachers we have in our community with our Excellent Educators Day.
For Alissa Barons, current grade 4-5 teacher at Assumption Catholic Elementary School, where she is now kind of seems like fate.
With 7 years of teaching now under her belt, she may just owe her career to the same place she spends her work day.
After taking a college course that led her to a co-op at Assumption, Barons says the rest is history.
After supply teaching for the first 3 years of her career, Barons landed her current full time position at Assumption, but she says the many unknowns at the start of her career accounted for one of the 2 biggest challenges she has faced thus far.
Despite the struggles that she and all teachers have faced throughout their careers, the positives she says is the growth in students you get to experience first hand.
As far as advice for any students thinking about becoming a teacher themselves, Barons says to make sure it’s something for you. Get some experience first and if you can see yourself doing it long term, then stick with it because it’s very rewarding.
