Elgin OPP and the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit are continuing to search for a Dutton man reported overdue around 11 a.m. Friday after departing Port Glasgow in his sailboat Thursday afternoon. He has been identified as 77-year-old Reginald Fisher. OPP Const. Troy Carlson says the water and air search has covered an area from Port Glasgow west to Erieau.
Around 7 p.m. Friday Fisher’s capsized vessel was spotted and a life jacket from the boat was found Saturday. Const. Carlson details the extent of the search efforts.
Const. Carlson says part of the search difficulty is the distance the sailboat had drifted.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre had mobilized the Canadian Coast Guard, Auxiliary Coast Guard, a C-130 Hercules Search Aircraft and several other search resources on Saturday but they have since withdrawn them due to the amount of time elapsed since the sailor’s disappearance was reported.
Const. Carlson adds the search will continue Monday at which time it will be re-evaluated at to what actions will be taken.
