It is located in an area of St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital that was built in 1954, and the age and inadequacies of the building systems have caught up with it. And so this morning (Monday), MPP Jeff Yurek announced the province will financially support relocation of the hospital laboratory to the basement of the new north tower. Yurek stressed the importance of meeting the needs of small- and medium-sized hospitals through infrastructure investments.
It’s simply a case of outgrowing their home many, many years ago, explains Lee-Ann Babcock manager, laboratory and infection prevention and control at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital. And so it was an exciting morning for Babcock and her staff.
The amount of provincial funding was not made available at this time as the project is in the tendering process, explained Yurek. Construction is expected to begin some time next year.
