It’s a first not only for Port Stanley, but for all of Canada. This morning, MP Kate Young, on behalf of Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, announced an investment of over $3.7 million to build a net-zero fire station in Port Stanley. Strathroy-Caradoc Mayor Joanne Vanderheyden, Second Vice-President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, referenced the new station – which will replace the existing out-dated station – as an important first in this county.
Central Elgin Mayor Sally Martyn added, the new fire hall, to be located at the corner of Sunset Drive and East Street, will serve as a symbol of Central Elgin’s commitment to protecting the environment.
The new fire hall will feature solar panels for on-site energy needs, which will result in an annual reduction of 45 per cent in energy consumption. Speaking at the announcement held at the Masonic Centre of Elgin, MP Young observed the fire hall is an example of green projects needed to grow the economy, save Canadians money, create jobs and achieve the county’s climate goals. Construction is expected to be completed by next spring.
