A close call Tuesday afternoon for a fishing tug in Lake Erie about five miles out from Port Stanley. The tug began taking on water after a damaged prop punctured the hull. It took about 45 minutes to tow it to shore with a second nearby tug. Central Elgin fire chief Chris McDonough had a crew standing by with a jet ski to assist if the second tug from Weaver Fisheries in Port Stanley ran into difficulty while towing the distressed vessel.
McDonough said Central Elgin firefighters were assisted by an OPP unit and a pair of helicopters deployed from Traverse, Michigan and Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan. McDonough added one crew member off the tug was transported to hospital as a precaution.
