There was no curbing the enthusiasm of St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston last week at a luncheon featuring the heads of three area municipalities. Speaking at the St. Anne’s Centre during the Chambers Lunch with the Mayors event, Preston noted the city is a great place to be a mayor.
He stressed the three priorities for city council this year are housing, transit and smart growth, with a particular emphasis on the need for residential development.
Preston said there is also a need to link Aylmer and Port Stanley with St. Thomas and then offer a regularly scheduled bus service to and from London.
As for transit within the city, Preston admitted the current service leaves much to be desired but promised significant improvements by the end of this year.
Preston said with the present council and city staff, St. Thomas is being run in an efficient way with smart people. He shared the podium Wednesday with Southwold Mayor Grant Jones and Central Elgin Mayor Sally Martyn
