Today myFM is celebrating local coaches and the impact they’ve had on athletes in Elgin County with our Hooray for Coaches Day feature, presented by Briwood Farm Market.
We spoke with Nikki Johnson who currently coaches Bantam girls hockey for the St. Thomas Panthers and U15 girls soccer for the St. Thomas Soccer Club.
Johnson first got involved coaching soccer when her nieces’ team was in need of a coach and after over 25 years of playing for the league, she decided to volunteer. Johnson also joined her sister as a hockey coach after playing the sport her entire life.
Johnson says that she finds it really rewarding to coach female athletes.
Johnson adds that she feels that it is very important for females to be coached by other females.
Johnson had a year full of personal accomplishments as a coach such as being named Top Coach at the myFM Spirit Awards and Coach of the year for the Elgin Middlesex Soccer Club but one of her proudest moments was bringing a team of mixed skilled hockey players to provincials, with each player returning to the sport the following year.
