The St. Thomas Fire Department spent part of the day at area schools yesterday, teaching kids about fire safety as well as walking them through their annual fire drill. myFM attended the drill at Forest Park Public School where the over 400 students got out of the building in under 2 minutes. Firefighters then showed the kids that they are just people underneath all the gear by dressing up one of their teachers. Learning support teacher Becky Afman was the lucky staff member picked to put on all the gear piece by piece while the firefighters explained the importance of each part of their uniform.
The kids also had a chance to take a look at the fire trucks and all their working parts, while also getting questions answers by the many firefighters that we on hand.
Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun says they hold these annual fire drills with the schools as a way to keep the process top of mind for the kids.
Destun says they will be holding the same drill and presentation at all the elementary schools in St. Thomas throughout the week as part of their Fire Prevention Week festivities. The STFD will also be holding open houses at both of their stations tonight from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
