2/13/2018 11:24:27 AM

Two men fined after attempting to kill a snapping turtle in Oxford County.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry say two Elgin County men were fishing along the Thames River this past summer when they caught the turtle.

A conservation officer happened to walk by and noticed the severely injured snapping turtle that the men tried to hide under a bucket.

The officer says the men tried to kill it in an attempt to eat it at a later time.

One man was fined $500 for hunting a game reptile without a licence while the other was fined $2,000 for the same offense.

It has been illegal to hunt for snapping turtles since April 1st, 2017.
