LOCAL STUDENT LEADS FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN FOR VAWSEC
12/7/2017 10:55:45 AM

A local high school student helped to raise nearly $650 ($643.35) for Violence Against Women Services Elgin County. Grade 12 Student at St. Joseph's High School Kyleigh Stubbs organized an awareness campaign in late November at her school to raise funds and increase the awareness of the work that the shelter does.

Stubbs organized Purple week which featured a purple day and also gave students the opportunity to purchase a purple scarf or tie.

Stubbs says that she really noticed the awareness for the campaign in the conversations throughout the week.

Stubbs says that since a lot of students utilize the shelter she felt it was important to make those students feel that the school can also be a safe place for them. The week coincided with a province wide initiative at all shelters called "Wrapped in Courage."

The funds will go towards transportation costs at the shelter which will allow women and children to access the shelter safely.
