CITY EXTENDS BUS PILOT PROJECT FOR 2018
12/5/2017 3:04:18 PM

The St. Thomas - Elgin Social Services Bus Pilot Project has been extended for next year. Council voted in favor of extending the vouchers continue to be available for Ontario Works recipients who are seeking employment. Through the project recipients can redeem the voucher at the Clerks Department in exchange for a bus pass.

New for the project next year vouchers will be made available for single parent house holds with children.

Social Housing Administrator Elizabeth Sebestyen says expanding the program will help the parents.

One of the reasons that the program has been expanded was the lack of people that used the program last year.

Staff allocated $75,000 for the program and just under $23,500 was used ($23,435). $75,000 has again been allocated for 2018. The project will be reevaluated at the end of next year.

The funding allocated for the program is also used for a variety of other program needs such as funerals for low income people and adult drug and dental costs among others.
