'MOORE FOOD GARDEN' GETS THE THUMBS UP FROM COUNCIL 5/18/2017 7:46:59 AM
St. Thomas City Council approved a community garden in the south west corner of the Moore Street Parking Lot.
Council approved the "Moore Food Garden" at Monday night's (May 15) St. Thomas City Council meeting. The garden is a partnership project between the Elgin-St. Thomas Public Health Unit, Destination Church the YWCA of St. Thomas Elgin and the Parks and Recreation Department.
St. Thomas City Councilor Linda Stevenson says as far as they know, it will be the first raised garden in Canada.
Stevenson says the garden will also have teaching opportunities as well.
Water and Hydro for the garden site will be available from the B X Tower property.
The health unit received $29,500 in funding from the Healthy Kids Community Challenge for the garden and are awaiting additional funding from Tree Canada.
Now that the garden has approval, Stevenson says she anticipates that the garden will get going within a week or two.
