A steel, three dimensional train sculpture was selected as the landmark for the centre of the new Gateway Roundabout at the west end of Talbot Street. City Council accepted City Staff's recommendation for the sculpture at Monday night's (May 15) meeting. The sculpture will feature a steam locomotive, a coal car, passenger car and a caboose.
The sculpture will be made by local blacksmith and artist, Scott McKay, who submitted the proposal to staff. The sculpture will cost $186,245. It will be made out of bridge steel which will require very little maintenance and give it a 100-year life cycle.
Cost of the project is covered under the existing capital budget for the roundabout project. Construction of the sculpture is expected to take 6 months.
