Premier Kathleen Wynne made a stop in St. Thomas to visit the new Violence Against Women Services Elgin County (VAWSEC) building. Wynne received a tour of the building located on Princess Ave on Thursday (July 27) afternoon.

POLICE CATCH SUSPECT ATTEMPTING TO RUN AWAY

Thanks to the work of the OPP's K9 team, a 30-year-old man is now behind bars. The man had fled on foot into a wooded area after being stopped by Oneida Police on Elijah Road on Wednesday afternoon.

POLICE SEARCHING FOR ONE OF THEIR OWN DRONES

The Ontario Provincial Police is asking residents in Elgin County near St. Thomas to help them find a missing drone. The police force says one of its operators was running a test flight of the drone in Southwold Township yesterday after the software in the unit had been updated.

READING GARDEN COMING TO ST. THOMAS PUBLIC LIBRARY

The St. Thomas Public Library will have a new place to sit and read outside next year. A new reading garden at the library has been announced that will be located outside the Ingram Room in the lower level at the west side of the building.

PLANS FOR NEW PORT STANLEY FIRE HALL ENTERS NEXT STAGE

Central Elgin Council is getting the ball rolling on plans for a new Fire Station in Port Stanley. 'ThomasBrown Architects' proposal ($195,500) came in just over $25,000 ($25,059.20) under the amount approved in the 2017 capital budget.

'BIG BALL DROP' SUPPORTS BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

Big Brothers Big Sisters Elgin County is literally dropping the ball with their latest fundraising initiative. Their "Big Ball Drop" contest on August 18th at will drop 2,000 golf balls from a helicopter! Each golf ball is $10 and the ball that lands in the hole or closest to will win $2,000.

IRISH SOCCER COACHES VISIT ST. THOMAS

For the second year in a row some soccer teams in St. Thomas are receiving training from some world class Irish coaches this week. Faith Baptist Church has brought over 8 FIFA Certified coaches from Ireland to help run their soccer camp.

SEVERAL PORT STANLEY RESIDENTS ATTEND HARBOUR WORKSHOP

The Port Stanley Harbour will look very different in 10 or 20 years from now. The steering committee and the Municipality of Central Elgin held a Port Stanley Harbour Secondary Plan Public Workshop on Monday evening for all members of the public to attend.

SUPREME COURT DISMISSES LINE 9 PIPELINE APPEAL

The Chippewas of the Thames First Nation will see the capacity of a pipeline that runs through their land increased and the flow reversed. The community had challenged that the National Energy Board did not consult them properly on the pipeline project.

The City's last major road construction project of the year means inconveniences for both vehicle and transit riders for the next 4 months. Construction on Stanley Street from Sunset Drive to William Street begins today.
